What does being human really mean?
Our true likes are shown in the most terrible of times. Oh we can all be so Noble.
When a woman cuts your queue en route up an escalator in a train station, you frown and think of 101 ways to make her pay back. However, when the train station is threatened by a Bomb-threat, everyone helps each other to get out of the station quickly, letting the women and children go up the escalator first, not caring whether she cuts your queue.
Of course there are always those who would scurry up and not care about anyone else, pushing and shoving their way through. Believe me when i say the next sentence; Given the Chance again, They will not do the same.
Why is it that we cannot be so generous when in times of peace?
Simple, our culture tells us that getting there first is good.
First place is good, getting to the finish line first is good. NOBODY remembers Second place.
how many first places can there be? only one... and this, continually chasing of first place, breeds the selfish thinking of, all for me.
and this results in : I COME FIRST.
I MUST GO AHEAD OF THE PERSON UP THAT ESCALATOR SO THAT I CAN REACH THERE FIRST.
FIRST, FIRST, FIRST.
afterall, it's always said, nice guys finish last.
so, those who keep gunning for first place..... hm...
is this what you are? Selfish?
You are only one person in this world.
1 / 6 BILLION people....
might as well say its nothing.
but if you care for your community, letting others go first, caring for others.
your not only one person, but ONE COMMUNITY.
like the community of Chinese people around the world....
sure beats 1 / 6 billion.
if you lookout for one another.... others will lookout for you.
that, Comradeship.... sure beats anything that First Place can give you.
First Place gives us rewards. but can these rewards buy the loyalty, trust, love, concern and selflessness that comradeship gives?
i highly doubt it.
Anyway? What's so bad about being in second place?
